Building the perfect hot drinks menu

Dan Pooley -

Taking a hot drink order can be a complicated process of variants and options so we decided to put together a best practice guide breaking down the steps to create a killer hot drinks menu in Kounta.

This process is most easily done on a computer, logging into Kounta through Google Chrome.

This process should take around half an hour to complete and will arm you with tools to improve other product categories within your Kounta as well.

The Checklist

Each section below goes into detail on each of the following points.

  • Import and refine base products
  • Create variant for sizes of coffee (and kinds of tea)
  • Create sets of options for the products (like sugar and milk selections) and set their rules
  • Assign the sets of options to appropriate products
  • Arrange the order of your sets of options
  • Arrange your products on the POS and test your menu

Import and refine base products

The first step is to add a base layer of coffee products to Kounta. Because coffee menus are generally similar, we've prepared an import which you can download and add to your Kounta at the bottom of this section. It includes images to give your coffee menu some life. You can add your own products in this step if you prefer. We've listed the most common Hot Drink products below (these are the ones included in the import)

  • Cappuccino
  • Chai Latte
  • Espresso
  • Flat White
  • Hot Chocolate
  • Latte
  • Long Black
  • Macchiato
  • Mocha
  • Piccolo Latte
  • Tea

If you're using tax inclusive pricing (the standard for Australia, UK, etc.) is the IncTax variation of the import below

Coffee import IncTax.csv

If you're using tax exclusive pricing (the standard for the USA) use the import below

Coffee import ExTax.csv

Create variant for sizes of Coffee (and kinds of tea)

After you've created your base products its time to create the variation of these products. Variants are products that are mutually exclusive like a small or large latte.

If you've used the coffee import above you should make the following variants following along with the video linked below. You can add additional variation if you offer additional sizes

  • Cappuccino
    • Small
    • large
  • Chai Latte
    • Small
    • Large

Arrange your products on the POS and test your menu

The final step is to go to the POS screen on your Kounta, arrange the items in the best order for your workflows and test the menu.

We've included 2 videos below to give you the steps to raging your items and change the product tile border colours.
