Lightspeed Payments - MOTO Transactions

Taking reservation deposits, paying upfront and taking payment when a card cannot be physically present can all be handled via Lightspeed Payments with a MOTO transaction.

Processing MOTO payments allows you to secure funds from customers without them needing to come to your venue with their credit/debit card.

Before you begin

  • If you’re not an Admin user, ensure you have the Manage Lightspeed Payments permission enabled. For help with enabling user permissions, head to our Managing User Permissions guide.
  • Your Lightspeed Payments terminal must be boarded and connected to the POS. To board and connect your terminals, see our Setting up Lightspeed Payments guide.

Enable MOTO transactions

To begin, you must first Enable MOTO transactions from the Back Office. This only needs to be done once, so you can set and forget.

  1. Go to the Lightspeed Payments integration from Back Office
  2. Toggle MOTO to On
  3. Select I understand and enable to confirm
  4. Sync your POS to apply the changes

Process a MOTO transaction

Once you have enabled MOTO, any user with the Process MOTO Transactions permission can process MOTO transactions. If a user doesn’t have this permission, they can select a user with the appropriate permissions and have them enter their PIN to proceed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I process MOTO transactions manually on the Lightspeed Payments terminal?

Whilst it is possible to perform a standalone MOTO transaction, we strongly advise against it. Standalone transactions cannot be refunded from the POS or payments terminal. If you do need to refund a standalone transaction, please contact our Support Team.

How do I refund a MOTO transaction?

You can refund a MOTO transaction the same way you would any other payment. Our guide on Refunding a sale on POS will show you how. And, no, you do not need the card to be present to refund the payment.

Is there a maximum amount I can charge via MOTO?

Yes, the maximum transaction value for MOTO is $2500. If you'd like to request a higher maximum limit, please contact our Support Team.

The Card Not Present (CNP) rate is set at the amount specified on your Lightspeed Payments quote.
